What dog makes a good family companion?

Someone I know has a large fenced in yard and a few children. They like the doors out and want to have a dog that has the outputs. They want a dog that is sociable and very active. What kind of AKC that this family is more likely to find a suitable dog? Toys, Sporting Goods, sporting or Hound This family was thinking about getting a pug but I'm not sure you can handle the pugs activies Outdoor Hiking, etc?

A laboratory would be the perfect choice, are great family dogs and love others, my two would be out walking and swimming all day if given the chance.
