Wildlife Biologist Kim Poole on the impact of diamond mining in Canada
FJ: Let's start with their experience in studying the impact diamond mining in Canada. What exactly was the scope of its work around the diamond mines and that you employed?
PK: I have been involved in environmental monitoring and assessment of the diamond mines in the Northwest Territories for about five years, designing, evaluating and reviewing programs for wildlife.
I came to this from the perspective of an independent consultant to review design and wildlife monitoring programs, and more recently as a member of the Independent Monitoring Environment Agency, a public watchdog for environmental monitoring for the diamond mines of BHP Billiton Ekati.
FJ: Who owns the land As mines are the mines that affect the environment and wildlife?
PK: I'm not sure but I think most of the mines are owned Crown land by the federal government. Mines of this nature have an impact on the environment and wildlife in any scale.
The Ekati mine, for example, currently is larger than 20 km2. This leads to a local displacement of small mammals and birds, and impacts to vegetation.
A larger scale of these mines NWT diamonds have made great efforts to minimize and mitigate potential environmental impacts.
Some changes in aquatic and terrestrial systems have occurred, but these are minimized and contained to the greatest extent possible.
Thus, while there is still potential impacts are currently being addressed and uncertainties in the system that require more control, generally these mines operate in an environmentally sound manner.
FJ: Can you give an idea of how to this economic development is affecting the indigenous communities, for better or for worse?
PK: Socio-economic impacts are not my specialty, but they Mine seem to have produced and well-paid, long-term training and employment for Aboriginal peoples in diaspora communities in the north.
In areas where opportunities for economic advancement are limited, I think this has tended to smooth out the cycles of expansion and development of resources of the bust that has occurred in the past in some areas.
This obviously has had an impact on the traditional Aboriginal lifestyle practiced by most Northerners until recently.
FJ: I heard from others that it is a booming city Yellowknife causing a number of problems. Any sense of this?
KP: I was living in Yellowknife for 15 years in the 1980 and 1990, leaving like the Ekati mine, the first diamond mine in Canada, was being built.
Located where it is, and depending on heavily on resource extraction (the city was built in two gold mines)
Yellowknife has always had a border / flavor prosperous city. Mines diamond definitely have intensified this medium.
FJ: Diamond mining is expanding in the region. What do you see as critical risks and keeping the environment as mining wastes?
PK: The main risk is to ensure that cumulative impacts of human activity that does not adversely affect on the environment, especially wildlife.
All mine alone can produce relatively minor, localized impacts but in concert with any other activity, all these sources of development (mining, communities, campgrounds, cabins, etc.) may exceed a threshold that could cause negative impacts.
Some wildlife in the north have huge annual intervals that have the potential to interact with the sources of disturbance through a wide area.
FJ: In your opinion, are all the mines of the same in terms of impact on the environment, or that some are better managed Other? What I'm trying to understand is whether or not a particular site has a reputation more expensive than other sites.
PK: In this day and age, I suggest that all mines in the north have environmental standards that are far superior to those which occurred in the past. There are a multitude of regulatory requirements, licenses and permits required to build and operate a mine, and a host of regulatory agencies that oversee this process.
That being said, every company has a slightly different approach to the process which means that some are actually easier to work with, and better managed than others.
FJ: Would you recommend a diamond in Canada in their environment activists friends?
PK: If it is a diamond in the plans of someone, yes, without hesitation.
FJ: Anything else you'd like to ad?
PK: Readers may wish to visit the website IEMA news about our review of the environmental agenda of Ekati.
Similar websites are available to two diamond mines operating in the Northwest Territories.
