Green School Supplies – A Guide Back to School for Students Going Green

It is clear that the classroom is where the future begins to develop. What better place than schools to use greener, healthier products and environmental sustainability of the model? The market is full of land use and school office supplies, health care students and their teachers. is non-toxic school supplies to make a real difference in indoor air quality and the level of toxins that our children are exposed to daily. Why not shut the leading polluters – PVC, BPA, lead and xylene – outside of class? A new generation of tools green school can send them packing.

Many school supplies are made of PVC – a plastic that contains chemical additives such as phthalates, lead, cadmium and / or organotin compounds. These chemicals pose a threat to our health and are harmful through its entire life cycle, from production, use, to disposal. Also known as the poison plastic, PVC in vinyl products such as lunch boxes, folders, markers, backpacks and equipment rain, and may take up to four centuries to decompose in a landfill. Identify the plastic leaching by recycling symbol of three arrows with the number 3 or the letters V or PVC.

Here are some safer alternatives to common school supplies:

Binders are often coated or manufactured PVC plastic. Try to folders that are made of corrugated cardboard, as the rebind, which can be found online through the Green Office. Avery also makes PVC-free binders and can be found at Staples and Target.

Lunchbags and coats that are PVC and lead lunch will download a little easier. Canvas organic cotton or lunchbags and coats are a safe alternative food, and have the additional advantage of eliminating all waste associated with plastic bags. Greenfeet.com, Reusablebags.com Ecobags.com and all offer food bags and wraps, and shopping-N-Mat Wrap your lunch and then opens onto a tablecloth to eat a clean surface. For a retro, tin lunch boxes as Tin Box Company can be found in many stores and are beginning to make a comeback thanks to the observation children of celebrity with tin lunchboxes.

The stainless steel container supply is a necessity, because the reusable Water Bottles can leach bisphenol many A (BPA), a chemical known to cause hormonal disorders, and should be avoided. Thermos sells plastic food containers are made of steel and PVC free BPA.

Markers and pens are one of the most commonly discarded in the classroom. Each year in North America, teachers pull more than 500 million markers dry erase their local landfill, where the PVC plastic bottles does not break down. In addition, the common chemical markers is solvent xylene, a neurotoxin harm that may be associated with headaches, asthma and confused thinking. As a green alternative, make a class set of AUSP Green dry erase markers that are not only made from 100% recycled aluminum, but also can be filled with low-odor, nontoxic ink.

art supplies can be a source of toxic material as well. Modeling clay as Fimo and Sculpey should be on the cutting block and replaced by PVC Crayola Air-drying clay or Softdough of Mary, which has a chemical-free formula. And while the humble pencil seems harmless, crayons from soy oil, as Star Kid and Prang, non-toxic, biodegradable and safe for the environment … and mouth curious.

As for back to school clothes shopping, some retailers help eliminate the concerns of our selection by stating that carry only PVC-free clothing and shoes. H & M, Nike and Asics products do not contain PVC, while JanSport and Land's End backpacks and rain jackets have rejected the poison plastic.

Whether it's a lead-free lunchbox, xylene-free marker, beverage container BPA-free or PVC-free binders and backpacks, the choice is clear. Election of school supplies non-toxic is worth the health of our schools, children and the environment. This year, post-school shopping can be a bit more reassuring, knowing that the green alternatives to toxic school supplies are back.
