The Best Moisturizer for Dry Skin Should Include Emollients Antioxidants and Natural Oils

When was the last time you bought what you thought was going to be the best moisturizer for dry skin, only to be disappointed because it didn’t achieve the results you were expecting!

Natural face moisturizers firstly need emollients to supply – 1. Occlusion (provide a layer of oil to slow water loss) – 2. Humectant (increase water holding capacity) – 3. Lubrication (slip across the skin) to the stratum corneum, the horny layer… the outermost layer of the epidermis.

The second substances needed are antioxidants. Anti-oxidants fight free radicals caused by oxidation – a chemical reaction. This creates oxidative stress that starts a chain reaction to damages skin cells.

The final substances are natural oils. Your skin needs to be hydrated and moisturized. Natural oils accomplish this by providing a seal over your skin to help prevent evaporation of water from the surface of your skin.

Some good emollients, antioxidants and natural oil ingredients to look for are:

D-Panthenol – is an emollient, humectant and moisturizer.  Panthenol a pro-vitamin rich in vitamin B5.

Jojoba oil – It contains natural tocopheroids (antioxidants found in vitamin E that disarm free radicals) to minimize oxidation.

Glycerin – is a non-toxic and non-irritating plant based humectant. It comes from natural plant oil and is not petroleum-based. Glycerin shores up the skin’s natural protection by filling the area known as the intercellular matrix and by attracting the right amount of water to maintain the skin’s homeostasis.

Finally, the best moisturizer for dry skin should include some if not all of the above hydrating and moisturizing ingredients.
