Hunting Deer from Ground?
About a month ago, I walked over some private land where I have the permission of the landowner to hunt. I was looking for and found a nice tree to put my new climbing stand. During this trip, I noticed what I thought were fresh deer tracks as I crossed a creek. I looked up and saw two deer about 15 yards away and looking at me! People who live close to this property are telling me that the deer are about to take this property over.Today, when I went back out there, all the trees of minimum size to hold my stand had been cut. I am 33 and this is only my second year hunting, I did not harvest a deer last year and my hopes have been dashed. I do have another place that allows me to hunt from their stands about a half of a mile from this location. Should I go to my back location and hunt from a stand or should I hunt from the ground in a place were I know deer are holding?
I use to think the only way I could hunt if I was in a tree. Many years ago I was hunting in a tree on a very cold and windy November day. The wind chill was about zero and the tree I was in was swaying so bad I could not have had a steady shot if I had to shoot, not to mention I was cold being up in that wind. So I climbed down to the ground and hunted about 20 yards from where I was at. Later that day I had a nice buck walk in the distance that could not have seen in the tree because of the undergrowth cover. I got my deer that day, my first from the ground. I have hunted in that spot and have taken a deer there nearly every year since.
In the early 90′s I watched professional hunter Roger Raglin, he took most of his deer at the time from the ground. After my first experience and watching him do it so much. I developed my own style of deer hunting. I done what suits me, what makes me comfortable. I have blended turkey hunting style with deer hunting. I set up on the ground, often in full camo, where I can see the most area and my back to a tree regardless of the size. I use natural cover to hide me (often I don’t wear camo).
The biggest thrill in hunting is getting close to deer when you take them. I have been as close as 3 yards and want to get even closer.
Watch this video, at about 2:58 on the timer is “Oklahoma” my favorite whitetail footage I have ever seen. It is hunting in it’s PUREST form.
To answer your question. Go to where the deer are, hunt on the ground.
