Who knows a lot about hiking the Appalachian Trail?

I'm just curious as to what people do on their jobs while they are along the road. Are they really understanding employers who keep their jobs for them or something? Also, what happens to pets? Would not you afraid you forget who you are? I love to walk the Appalachian Trail in a few years, but I have two cats do not like me I forget, and I will be a CPA at the time. I'm thinking it is not practical.
