Vitamins For Acne Are The Solution For Clear Skin

Antioxidants are beneficial to the skin’s health in many ways. When it comes to acne, doctors have found that most newly diagnosed patients have low blood levels of certain antioxidants, although it is not known if this is a causal or a coincidental relationship.

Acne affects about 90% of all teenagers to some degree or another. Most people have occasional blemishes or pimples throughout their lives, particularly women, as a result of hormonal changes or sensitivity to toxins in the environment.

Cystic acne, the most severe kind, is less common, but is accompanied by a similar lack of antioxidants in the bloodstream. Recent research from Jordan indicates that the more severe the condition, the lower the blood levels of antioxidants.

No one knows why some people develop severe acne, while others do not. Genetics may play a role, as acne seems to run in families.

There are differences of opinion about whether it is actually genetics that is involved or familial dietary habits. Kids tend to eat the same foods that their parents like. If their parents do not eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, that would explain the low blood levels of antioxidants.

The vitamins A and E are two of the most common antioxidants. They are found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. For example, carrots and other red or orange vegetables are excellent sources of vitamin A.

Asparagus, spinach, wheat germ and almonds are good sources of vitamin E. Cooking the vegetables reduces the nutrient content. Food combining helps to ensure nutrient uptake. For example, a small amount of fat, such as is present in almonds and other nuts contributes to the absorption of vitamin E.

The most commonly prescribed drugs for the treatment of acne are retinoids. What are retinoids? They are synthetic versions of the anti-oxidant vitamin A.

Retinoids are prescribed for topical application and can also be taken internally. But, they are accompanied by numerous unwanted side effects, including birth defects in women that become pregnant while taking the drugs.

At high doses, even natural vitamin A (retinol) can be toxic, causing a variety of health problems and even death. On the other hand, beta-carotene, the kind of vitamin A found in carrots and other vegetables is nontoxic, even at high doses. The body converts it on an as-needed basis to vitamin A. The rest is simply discarded.

If you are not a fan of eating fruits and vegetables, you might consider taking a good multivitamin that contains both beta-carotene and “natural” vitamin E. Be sure to check that it is the natural form. Most of what’s on the market is synthetic. Synthetic vitamin E is derived from petrochemicals and could be bad for your health.

Antioxidants other than the vitamins A and E may be beneficial, as well. Vitamins A and E are the two that are most commonly used with great results.
