Gerber Military

Gerber Military
Your Very 1st Unit….Your Experience ?

This is for everyone in the Military..New soldiers & Vets…

How did you feel when you got to your 1st unit in the military?

Were you lost?

Didn’t know the some of the Military “lingo”?

Didn’t know what to do as your job for the 1st few days?

What was it like for you living on base?

As for myself…when I first got to Fort Bliss(where my 1st unit was) I was so intimidated by all the NCOs walking around the base..because I just got out of AIT & was so used to being yelled at by anyone E-5 or higher.
Also I didn’t know which NCO or officer to go to if i had a problem with something…So I would skip the chain of command alot the 1st few weeks..that got my NCOs in trouble at times :P

BTW..I didn’t know what a “Gerber” for months till a battle buddy showed me one.

I seved 4 years in the Marine Corps, my first unit, was sea duty. I checked in around 2100 and was told to hit the rack. Around 2 or 3 o’clock in the morning I was pulled from my rack by about 3 or 4 other Marines who just started kicking my ass for a few minutes. When they were done thy just said welcome to the Mar Det. The next day was a Friday, a group of them took me to Tokyo got me drunk and laid. After that everything was fine, it took a little while to pick up the lingo and figure my way around the ship and base, but someone will always look out for you. Of course the “FNG” practical jokes go on to another “FNG” checks-in. One of the dumbest things they made me do was find batteries for the sound power phones.
