What lens would you recommend for the Canon EOS 40D to be used for Landscape/Fall Foliage…?

I’m not new to digital cameras, but I am new to DSLRs with interchangeable lenses. I have the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens, but I am looking for other lens options (for travel photos, fall foliage shots, etc). I would like to pick up a larger zoom and maybe a wide angle lens, but I was wondering what other people use for their main (most used) lens for outdoor shots?

I use two lenses with Canon 20D.
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized lens.
With Canon 40D it would work as 27 – 135mm (Canon bodies have crop factor 1.6).
It covers from wide angle to low telephoto (135mm). Very convenient for travel and outdoor.
However, this lens will overlap your lens (45 – 216mm with 1.6 crop factor).

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized lens.
With Canon 40D it would work as 112 – 480mm.

So, this combination covers pretty wide range (from 28 to 480mm), which is very convenient for travel, outdoor, landscape and other situations.
My main lens (80% of time) is 17-85mm.

Your lens (28 – 135mm) with Canon 40D would work as 45 – 215mm.
If you want to extend to wide angle side, check Canon EF 18-55mm (27-85mm with Canon 40D).
It’s not expansive lens (~$140) wouldn’t dramatically overlap your current lens.
For telephoto option you could try Canon 100-400mm (160 – 640mm with Canon 40D).
It’s pretty expansive however.

Suggestion: try as much as possible you current lens. It would help you better understand what do you want. It’s September, and for fall foliage your lens is almost perfect.

CANON DIGITAL CAMERA: EXPRESS, SHOOT AND SHARE
