The Essential Equipment for the Serious Cyclist
If you’re interested in long-distance bicycling, bicycle racing, or triathlons, you’re going to need more than just a good bicycle. A wide variety of bike supplies are available, and here are some things you’re going to want, whether you’re entering a local 10K or the Tour de France.
- Helmet: Of course, this is a basic part of any cyclist’s equipment, serious or not. Get a helmet that fits you snugly and comfortably and has a smooth, rounded shape without exaggerated vents or projections that could snag on something. Some helmets have built-in visors, but these can shatter dangerously if you fall. A good pair of bicycle sunglasses are a better option to protect your eyes against sun, wind, and debris.
- Clothing: Look for snug-fitting, synthetic bike shorts, jersey, and socks to help keep you comfortable and wick moisture away from your skin. If you’re a long-distance rider, padded shorts are well worth the investment. Padded cycling gloves will help avert numbness from the pressure of your hands on the handlebars, and are a safeguard against hamburger hands if you fall. For maximum efficiency in pedaling, fit your bike with clipless pedals and wear bike shoes that can be attached directly to the pedals.
- Hydration: A bike water bottle and cage are a must to keep yourself hydrated on long rides. Having water at hand will make a huge difference in your stamina, comfort, and health. If you ride very long and hard, or hate having to stop to take the bottle out, a Camelbak Hydration Pack may work better for you.
- Bike accessories: If you’re planning to ride at night, be sure your bike is outfitted with sufficient reflectors and a lighting system first. A rear-view mirror is also useful if you’re going to be sharing the road with cars and other cyclists. And a gel cover, or other form of extra padding, on the saddle never hurts.
- Bike maintenance and security: While you don’t want to weigh yourself down too much, carrying a lightweight frame pump is a better alternative to having a day’s riding ruined by a flat. Toss a bike tool kit into the trunk of your car, and you’ll be ready to handle any mechanical problems. And with all that you’ve invested in your bicycle, it goes without saying that you want a quality bike chain to keep it secure.
