running with a camelbak?? any suggestions/experiences/advice??
i love to run, but always have “hit the wall” about mile 7 because i don’t bring hydration with me… i like to run with nothing on my back or in my hands, just free. however, im going to start running to and from work, and just purchased a Camelbak Octane xc for this purpose- for hydration and a place to stash my keys, wallet, phone, etc. surely there’s some avid runners out there who have experienced running with a pack.. how is it? id imagine it would bounce around and be kind hard to get used to, even with the sternum and waist straps. any input/opinions/experiences/tips etc. would be much appreciated. thank you! ![]()
sorry… i meant hitting my “hydration wall” by that. i do realize the difference between the two, that’s why i put it in quotation marks.
i’ve never actually hit the wall for real.
Besides the obvious “flopping around” that you mentioned, hydration backs contribute to a lot of sweating in the back area. A rather large surface area to hinder sweat evaporation. This will cause your entire body temperature to rise, which in turn will lead to more sweating. Operating at a higher temperature will slow your performance.
Camelbaks were originally designed for road cyclists, where body movement in this area wasn’t as much of a concern as with running. i.e. the constant bouncing.
There’s many advantages to having a volume of water and storage space, and if it outweighs the disadvantages then go for it. If you’re overly concerned, before using it, return it for the smallest model you can get away with that still holds the volume of water you require.
“Hitting the wall” shouldn’t be confused with dehydration. The wall is where the muscles run completely out of glycogen (fuel) and cannot continue exertion, no matter how much you want it.
