Semi automatic sport rifle quest?
So, I got a new gun today. Now I’m starting to due a little research for my next purchase. I don’t own a semi auto rifle at this point. I figure I have a need need for one. Some of the guns I’m considering are the Remington R-25 in .243 Win, Remington R-15 VTR Predator in .223 Rem, or a Ruger SR-22R in .22LR.
I also know there is a big price difference between the guns I mentioned. This is not something I plan on buying tomorrow. There will be plenty of time to save up for what ever I decide is the best model, if thats is one of the pricier ones.
This isn’t going to be a deer rifle. It’s mostly going to be for plinking fun and maybe an occasional coyote. I know a .22 is cheapest to shoot. I also know that a .243 would be more effective for shooting yotes. Does anyone have a recommendation? Also, what is the advantages of a vertical or pistol grip? I actually don’t care for them on a rifle. Should I just get a basic 10-22 for my purposes?
There is a conversion kit available for converting an AR15 from .223 to .22R, available from Brownells.
Then, you could have the best of both worlds you seek.
A cheap plinker AND a coyote hunter, in a semi-auto configuration.
The 223 is a good round for popping yotes, and the 22lr is great practice for it.
I think every responsible gun owner needs an AR15 in their collection, not just because it’s a really fun rifle to shoot, but it’s such a versatile caliber, and ammo is usually available for it, marginally inexpensively.
That being said, 22lr is almost always on the shelf, cheap (I just got 500 rounds for 18 a box), and is my preferred practice round for form and function.
It’s fun to take squirrels and rabbits with headshots too.
So, go get yourself a nice AR, get the Brownells conversion kit, and a few magpul mags for your 223 play, and go enjoy a great rifle.
