What is the difference between A men’s backpacking backpack and a women’s?

I’m looking for a backpack for my girlfriend and I’m wondering what the difference is between them. I have a spare backpack but its probbably too big for her and wont fit right.. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

- A women’s backpack has a hipbelt set at an angle to better fit the shape of a women’s pelvis and hips, since women tend to have broader hips and smaller waists than men.
- In addition, women’s backpacks usually have Shoulder Straps that are set at a more narrow width and curved in, since men tend to have broader shoulders than women. The shoulder straps on a men’s backpack will often dig in to the outer shoulder and rib area on women.
- No matter what type of backpack she uses, the most important factor is that it fits her properly. First measure her torso, from the bony vertebrae at the base of the neck (C7 vertebra) down the spine to the iliac crest at the top of the hipbones. Find a pack that fits into her torso size range. - Go to a good gear store and have them load up different packs for her to try on and feel how they fit when full.
- Ask the gear store if they will rent a women’s pack for her to try before making a big investment.
- I would highly recommend the REI Women’s Flash backpack, which comes in 3 torso lengths and is very light. The Osprey Aura and Ariel are very nice lightweight women’s backpack in different sizes, but tend to cost more. The Kelty Women’s Nimble 3500 is a nice pack with an adjustable torso range, at a good price. GoLite and Granite Gear also make good lightweight women’s packs.
