Can you go skiing when the lifts and ski areas close for the season?

I went hiking last year in May and there were still people skiing. They had on Alpine Touring skis I think. It looked fun. They had the mountain all to themselves. Do people do that very much? Is it possible to just do that with regular all mountain skis? I am just a beginner at skiing. But maybe that would be a good way to get cheap practice.

Can you use skins for all mountain skis or should you just take off your skis and hike? Maybe I could carry a backpack and some snowshoes.

I do. You can use AT or Telemark skis. You can’t use skins very well with regular skis. You can strap your skis to a backpack and just boot it up the hill…snowshoes are optional. Only a few snowshoe bindings will fit over ski boots. (MSR snowshoes will.) Before I got Telemark skis I used to boot it up the hills a lot. Sometimes I still have to because it can get too steep for skins.

AT bindings are heavier than Telemark bindings, but anyone can use them. Ideally you want AT boots as well, but for short distances you could use almost any regular ski boot in AT bindings. You don’t need to learn how to ski another way with AT stuff, but if you really want to be cool, learn how to use Telemark skis. The boots are more comfortable and the skis and bindings are lighter too.
